Tipping

To tip or not to tip?  When do you ever stiff a waiter/waitress?  The other day we went out to eat at a fairly priced restaurant, to celebrate our birthdays.  There were 7 of us.  We ordered appetizers and entrees along with our non-alcoholic drinks. When the bill came, there was an automatic 18% gratuity added on.  Our bill was about $160.00.

What bothers me about this, is the fact that our server didn't deserve 18%. Granted, the standard is 15% for decent service and to me, that's what I would have left him.  Are we obliged to give the one server 18% tip even though he wasn't a great of a waiter?

He was an OK server, but at times took too long to come to our table to ask for another drink.  He disappeared too long, and forgot a side dish we also ordered.
